Abstract

Air quality deterioration has become an increasingly concerning environmental issue at both global and national levels. As a developing country with a large population, Indonesia faces significant challenges in managing air pollution. Based on the Air Quality Index (AQI), Indonesia recorded one of the poorest air quality conditions in Southeast Asia in 2024. Air pollution is generally driven by transportation activities, industrial operations, and economic activities, most of which are concentrated on Java Island. As the most densely populated island and the center of Indonesia’s industrial and economic activities, Java has a greater potential for air pollution than other regions. Therefore, this study focuses on analyzing the factors affecting air quality on Java Island using the Geographically Weighted Regression (GWR) method to examine spatial variations in the effects of explanatory variables across regions. The results indicate that all predictor variables are significant in at least one regency or municipality. The estimated coefficients generally exhibit directions consistent with the model specification, although inconsistencies were identified in several regions, which may be attributed to differing local characteristics. Furthermore, clustering based on significant variables resulted in 13 groups of regencies and municipalities with distinct combinations of factors influencing AQI. The clustering results reveal that regions with poorer air quality are generally characterized by the combined influence of population density and industrial gross regional domestic product (GRDP). Most regions within the same cluster are geographically adjacent, suggesting the presence of localized spatial influences on air quality. These findings indicate that the factors affecting air quality on Java Island exhibit spatial heterogeneity. Therefore, air quality management and pollution control policies should take into account the specific characteristics of each region to ensure more effective and targeted interventions.
