Abstract

Automatic well-seismic tie on data with significant Q attenuation faces two main challenges: seismic wavelet non-stationarity due to frequency decay with depth, and temporal misalignment between synthetic seismograms and seismic traces. This study integrates Gabor Deconvolution and Dynamic Time Warping (DTW) to address both problems automatically. Gabor Deconvolution is used to estimate time-variant wavelets in the time-frequency domain, while DTW with the Marker Anchored approach aligns synthetic seismograms to seismic traces using formation marker positions as hard constraint anchor points. Validation on controlled synthetic data shows that Gabor Deconvolution successfully recovers wavelet frequency and amplitude components with a global correlation coefficient of r = 0.951 and frequency RMSE of 7.96 Hz, although phase estimation at deeper zones was not fully achieved due to Hilbert transform instability as SNR decreases with cumulative Q attenuation. Marker Anchored DTW yields correlation r = 0.990–0.993 with tops error = 0 across all stretch and squeeze scenarios of ±10%–±30%, compared to Fixed Band which produces comparable correlation but with tops error of 4–6 markers per scenario. The method was applied to field data from the Torosa Field, Browse Basin, covering five wells: NSR-1, Torosa-2, Torosa-3, Torosa-4, and Torosa-5, yielding correlation r = 0.571–0.800 with tops error = 0 across all wells, improved from pre-tie conditions of r = -0.236 to 0.205. On the 2D seismic section, all markers from the Barracouta Formation to the Triassic are laterally consistent on the same reflector across all five wells, confirming that the integration of Gabor Deconvolution and Marker Anchored DTW is effective for automatic well-seismic tie-on field data with complex Q attenuation characteristics.
