Abstract

Indonesia is one of the world’s largest economies and also has a steady economic growth of around 5% annually. This performance has made the country an attractive market for foreign investors. One of the easiest ways to invest in Indonesia is through its stock market managed by the Indonesian Stock Exchange. Domestically, KSEI shows the number of retail investors has exploded more than sevenfold since 2019 to the end of 2025. This study will examine spillover effects among various stock sectors in Indonesia. Diebold and Yilmaz constructs a method to analyze the magnitude, direction, and dynamics between these sectors. This method is based on the Vector Autoregressive (VAR) model and the Generalized Forecast Error Variance Decomposition (GFEVD). To capture volatility, the Rogers-Satchell volatility estimation approach is used, which incorporates daily price range information (Opening, Closing, High, and Low). The analysis will be conducted in two stages, a static analysis using the full sample period and a dynamic one which uses a rolling window approach to capture differences over time. It is found that internal volatility at 58,1893% contributes more than cross sector volatility spillovers at 41,8107%. Sectors such as IDXINDUST, IDXCYCLIC, IDXINFRA, IDXNONCYC, IDXBASIC, and IDXPROPERT are identified as net transmitters of volatility, while IDXHEALTH, IDXTRANS, IDXTECHNO, IDXFINANCE, and IDXENERGY act as net receivers. Dynamic analysis reveals that spillover effects are not constant over time and are influenced by major global events, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, Trump tariff announcements, and issues related to MSCI. These events not only trigger spikes in spillover intensity, but also generates an elevated level of spillover intensity for an extended period of time. The researcher hopes that these findings contribute to the literature concerning spillover analysis on emerging markets and to help investors and policymakers on understanding the risk of the Indonesian stock market.
