Abstract

Pasar Baru is one of the oldest shopping districts in Jakarta, holding significant historical and cultural value as a multiethnic trading hub inhabited by Chinese, Indian, European, and local communities. However, with the emergence of modern shopping centers, the area has experienced a decline in attractiveness. Contributing factors include the lack of supporting facilities, an unintegrated wayfinding system, and an inconsistent visual identity. In addition, shifting consumer preferences toward modern malls offering comfort and complete facilities, coupled with the absence of sustainable revitalization strategies, have further diminished the heritage image of Pasar Baru and reduced the quality of visitor experiences. This design project aims to develop an Environmental Graphic Design (EGD) system as part of the revitalization program for Pasar Baru, focusing on strengthening visual identity, navigation systems, and enhancing visitor spatial experiences. The design methodology includes field observation, literature review, analysis of existing conditions, comparative studies, and in-depth interviews with stakeholders from the Pasar Baru district office and expert informants. The main concept, “Faces of Passer Baroe”, represents the visual identity of Pasar Baru through architectural character, multiethnic culture, trading activities, and heritage elements. This concept is applied to an integrated signage and wayfinding system by developing signage forms, graphic systems, an information hierarchy, material selection, and media implementation within the district. The final outcome consists of an EGD system encompassing signage, wayfinding, implementation video, and a guideline document titled Passer Baroe: Signage and Wayfinding System Guidelines. This design is expected to improve spatial legibility, reinforce the visual identity of Pasar Baru’s heritage, and support the revitalization program, making the area more relevant and appealing to both the public and tourists in the modern era.
