Abstract

The development of renewable-based chemical industries has become an important strategy in supporting the energy transition and low-carbon economic development in Indonesia. One opportunity is Bio-Propylene Glycol (Bio-PG), which is produced from crude glycerol as a by-product of the biodiesel industry. The utilization of crude glycerol into Bio-PG has the potential to increase domestic value added, reduce dependence on Propylene Glycol imports, and support circular economy principles and bio-based chemical industries. This study aims to develop a sustainable business model for Bio-Propylene Glycol (Bio-PG) based on crude glycerol in Indonesia using the approaches of Value Chain Analysis, Business Model Canvas (BMC), Operating Model Canvas (OMC), and Triple Bottom Line (TBL). The study employs a mixed-method approach supported by financial feasibility analysis using the Discounted Cash Flow (DCF) method. Model validation was conducted through site visits, interviews with industry practitioners, and Focus Group Discussions (FGD). The results show that Indonesia has adequate crude glycerol feedstock availability in line with increasing national biodiesel production. Project integration with existing facilities at Refinery Unit VI Balongan provides opportunities for operational and utility efficiencies. The high dependence on Propylene Glycol imports creates opportunities for domestic Bio-PG development as an import-substitution product and a more environmentally friendly bio-based product. Financial analysis indicates that the project is feasible, with a Net Present Value (NPV) of US$49.8 million, an Internal Rate of Return (IRR) of 18.14%, a Profitability Index (PI) of 1.50, and a Payback Period (PBP) of 10.87 years. This study produces a sustainable Bio-PG business model that integrates economic, social, and environmental aspects and can serve as a reference for the development of the bio-petrochemical industry and crude glycerol downstreaming initiatives in Indonesia.
