Abstract

Concrete structures operating in marine environments are susceptible to degradation due to seawater penetration, chloride ions, and other aggressive substances that accelerate concrete deterioration and reinforcement corrosion. One effective approach to improving concrete durability is the application of epoxy coating as a protective barrier that limits the ingress of water and aggressive agents into concrete pores. This study aimed to investigate the effect of epoxy coating thickness variation on adhesion strength, surface hydrophobicity, and water absorption resistance of marine concrete. An experimental study was conducted using 10 × 10 × 10 cm concrete cube specimens consisting of uncoated concrete, 2-layer epoxy coating, and 3-layer epoxy coating. The coating performance was evaluated through the Pull-Off Adhesion Test based on ASTM D4541, the Contact Angle Test, and the Water Absorption Test. The results indicated that the 3-layer epoxy coating exhibited the best overall performance. The average adhesion strength increased from 2.332 MPa for the 2-layer coating to 2.442 MPa for the 3-layer coating. The Contact Angle Test results also increased from 63.10° and 51.55° for uncoated concrete to 79.29° and 73.07° for the 2-layer coating, and further to 84.64° and 79.53° for the 3-layer coating, indicating an improvement in surface hydrophobicity, although all specimens remained within the hydrophilic category (contact angle < 90°). Furthermore, the Water Absorption Test showed that the specimen weight gain after immersion decreased from 0.226 kg for uncoated concrete to 0.063 kg for the 2-layer coating and 0.034 kg for the 3-layer coating, demonstrating that increasing the coating thickness effectively reduced water penetration into the concrete. Therefore, increasing the thickness of the epoxy coating improves adhesion strength, enhances surface hydrophobicity, and reduces water absorption, thereby increasing the durability of concrete structures and helping to mitigate degradation in marine environments.
