Abstract

The high content of dissolved ions in water encourages the development of effective and energy-efficient water treatment technology, one of which is Capacitive Deionization (CDI). The performance of CDI is greatly influenced by the characteristics of the electrode, so a material that has good electrical conductivity and is electrochemically stable is needed. Hazelnut shells are biomass that has the potential to be used as CDI electrodes because of its high carbon content. This study aims to analyze the effect of variations in the concentration of KOH activators on the characteristics and electrochemical performance of the carbon electrode of pecan shells and to evaluate the suitability of variations in KOH concentration based on electrochemical performance parameters for CDI applications. Carbon is obtained through the carbonization process of pecan shells and activated using KOH solutions with concentration variations of 5%, 10%, and 15%. Characterization was carried out using Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), electrical conductivity testing, Cyclic Voltammetry (CV), and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS). The FTIR results in the 15% KOH sample showed the presence of O–H, C=C, and C–O functional groups on the carbon surface. The electrical conductivity value increased as the KOH concentration increased, with the highest value of 972.6 μS/cm in the 15% KOH sample. The highest specific capacitance was obtained in the inactivated sample of 0,1345 F/g, while the highest sodium ion diffusion coefficient was obtained in the 5% KOH sample of 1.3251 cm²/s. The results showed that the variation in KOH concentration exerted a different influence on each electrochemical parameter. Samples without activation are best suited for charge storage needs, 5% KOH samples for ion transport, and 15% KOH samples for electron delivery in CDI applications.
