Abstract

Subsea pipeline systems are critical infrastructures used for exploration, production, and the transportation of oil and gas from offshore fields to onshore facilities. They are the preferred transportation option over long distances because they offer greater efficiency in terms of both time and cost. However, the transportation of hydrocarbons through subsea pipelines involves various hazards that may lead to pipeline or system failure. This study investigates the design of a subsea pipeline with emphasis on the key engineering aspects, including pipe wall thickness calculation, pipeline stability, free-span assessment, thermal expansion, and stress analysis. The design calculations indicate that the minimum required pipe wall thickness is 12.33 mm. To satisfy both lateral and vertical stability requirements under all loading conditions, a minimum concrete coating thickness of 40 mm is required. The free-span analysis determines a maximum allowable free-span length of 12.83 m based on the more conservative fatigue screening criterion, compared with 39.21 m according to the Ultimate Limit State (ULS) criterion. Thermal expansion analysis predicts an expansion length of 0.10 m and a virtual anchor length of 432.06 m. Stress analysis of the pipeline spool shows maximum Von Mises stresses of 256.01 MPa for Model 1 and 269.88 MPa for Model 2, with corresponding hoop stresses of 174.82 MPa and 204.58 MPa, and longitudinal stresses of 166.21 MPa and 142.05 MPa, respectively. The largest displacement in both models occurs at point A09 on Bend 1, reaching total displacements of 10.65 mm for Model 1 and 18.92 mm for Model 2. Overall, the analysis confirms that the proposed pipeline design satisfies the allowable limits specified in the ASME B31.8 and DNV standards.
