Abstract

Nanofluids based on synthetic ester oil with a combination of Fe3O4 and TiO2 nanoparticles have the potential to enhance transformer dielectric strength more effectively than single nanoparticles. Based on this potential, this study investigates the effect of combined Fe3O4 and TiO2 nanoparticles at 6 ratios on the breakdown voltage and partial discharge characteristics of MIDEL 7131 synthetic ester oil contaminated with cellulose at concentrations of 0, 0.5, and 1 g/L. The effectiveness of the combination was evaluated through 6 day visual sedimentation observation, breakdown voltage testing in sphere-to-sphere and needle-to-plane configurations, and PDIV, PDEV, and PRPD analysis. Sedimentation results show that the 50% TiO2-50% Fe3O4 ratio exhibits the best dispersion stability. In breakdown voltage testing, the 50% TiO2-50% Fe3O4 ratio yields the highest BDV, with improvements of 16.86% in the sphere-to-sphere configuration and 28.50% in the needle-to-plane configuration compared to single-nanoparticle TiO2. Cellulose addition consistently reduces the dielectric strength of all samples, although the 50% TiO2-50% Fe3O4 ratio still shows better resistance under all contamination conditions. The highest PDEV value is obtained at the 50% TiO2-50% Fe3O4 ratio, with a 15.64% improvement over single-nanoparticle TiO2, and PRPD analysis shows more controlled discharge intensity with a more uniform phase distribution. The 50% TiO2-50% Fe3O4 ratio also produces the thinnest cellulose bridges across all contamination concentrations tested.
