Abstract

Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage Enhanced Oil Recovery (CCUS-EOR) is a promising solution for increasing crude oil production while supporting carbon emission reduction in the oil and gas industry. This study aims to evaluate the technical and economic feasibility of implementing a pilot-scale CCUS-EOR project in Field X using the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) -TOPSIS method. The AHP method was applied to determine the priority of CO₂ source selection based on four main criteria: CO₂ quality and specification, reservoir and CO₂ supply capacity, transportation distance and requirements, and operational and risk aspects. The evaluation results indicate that CO₂ quality and specification is the most dominant criterion, with a weighting factor of 55.8%. The technical analysis demonstrates that the implementation of CCUS-EOR in Field X is technically feasible, requiring additional facilities including a compression system, dehydration unit, booster compressor, and pumping system. The technical and economic assessment results were subsequently validated through engineering design evaluation, operational data analysis, and economic feasibility assessment. The projected CO₂ injection rate for Field X is approximately 106,966 tCO₂ per year, while the implementation of CCUS-EOR is expected to increase oil production by approximately 146,000 barrels per year. The economic analysis indicates that the proposed CCUS-EOR project has strong economic potential, generating total annual revenue of approximately USD 11.62 million from incremental oil production and carbon credits. With an estimated CAPEX of USD 12.63 million and an annual OPEX of USD 1.77 million, the project generates a cumulative discounted cash flow of approximately USD 4.45 million by the end of the second year of operation. Furthermore, the net Levelized Cost of CO₂ (LCO₂) of –USD 27.6 per tCO₂ stored indicates that the project not only covers the cost of CO₂ management but also generates economic benefits. In addition, the risk assessment indicates that failure to implement CCUS-EOR may result in lower oil recovery, accelerated production decline, increased dependence on gas flaring, and the loss of opportunities for permanent geological CO₂ storage. Therefore, the implementation of CCUS-EOR provides significant benefits from technical, operational, economic, and environmental perspectives.
