Abstract

Compost leachate contains high concentrations of organic matter, ammonia, and suspended solids, which may cause environmental pollution if not properly managed. This study evaluated the effectiveness of a sequential treatment system consisting of a zeolite pretreatment stage using natural zeolite and activated zeolite combined with phytoremediation plants, namely water lettuce (Pistia stratiotes) and water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes), in reducing pollutant concentrations in compost leachate collected from the Wonorejo Compost House, Surabaya. The experiment was conducted at laboratory scale using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with independent variables including zeolite type, phytoremediation plant species, and hydraulic retention time (12 and 24 hours). The initial characteristics of the untreated leachate showed COD, BOD, TSS, and ammonia concentrations of 2,520 mg/L, 1,249 mg/L, 340 mg/L, and 785.79 mg/L, respectively. Observations were carried out over a 21-day period with sampling conducted on days 3, 5, 7, 14, and 21.
The results demonstrated that all treatment variations consistently reduced pollutant concentrations throughout the observation period. The best-performing reactor was the combination of activated zeolite with a 24-hour contact time and water hyacinth (24-ZA-EG), which achieved removal efficiencies of 87.3% for COD, 92.0% for BOD, 86.5% for TSS, and 70.8% for ammonia on day 21. Water hyacinth consistently exhibited better treatment performance than water lettuce, while activated zeolite produced lower effluent concentrations than natural zeolite across all treatment variations.
