Abstract

Perubahan iklim yang disebabkan oleh peningkatan emisi gas rumah kaca menuntut upaya mitigasi yang efektif, salah satunya melalui peran ekosistem pesisir sebagai penyerap karbon. Padang lamun merupakan ekosistem blue carbon yang mampu menyerap dan menyimpan karbon dalam jumlah besar, terutama pada sedimen yang berfungsi sebagai carbon sink jangka panjang. Namun, kajian mengenai sumber dan karakteristik karbon organik sedimen padang lamun di Indonesia masih terbatas, sehingga menimbulkan ketidakpastian dalam estimasi stok blue carbon. Kondisi ini juga terjadi di pesisir Kecamatan Sepulu, Kabupaten Bangkalan, khususnya Desa Labuhan, yang memiliki padang lamun dengan karakteristik lingkungan khas dan dipengaruhi oleh aktivitas antropogenik, tapi belum didukung oleh data ilmiah yang memadai. Penelitian ini penting dilakukan untuk menentukan jumlah karbon organik dan mengkaji sumber maupun komposisi karbon organik sedimen padang lamun sebagai dasar pengelolaan ekosistem pesisir dan upaya mitigasi perubahan iklim. Penelitian ini dibagi menjadi 3 tahapan, yaitu penelitian lapangan, analisis laboratorium dan analisis data. Penelitian lapangan terbagi menjadi 2 yaitu penilaian luas tutupan lamun dan pengambilan sampel yang akan dilakukan di perairan pesisir Desa Labuhan, Kecamatan Sepulu, Kabupaten Bangkalan. Analisis laboratorium dilakukan dengan metode Walkey-Black untuk perhitungan kandungan karbon organik pada sedimen. Metode LOI untuk mengetahui karbon organik pada biomassa lamun. Untuk menganalisis kandungan total nitrogen (TN) dilakukan uji metode Kjeldahl. Hasil penelitian menunjukan, sedimen pada ekosistem lamun di Desa Labuhan, Kecamatan Sepulu, Kabupaten Bangkalan memiliki kandungan karbon organik yang tergolong rendah hingga sangat rendah. Nilai karbon organik (%OC) yang diperoleh berkisar antara 0,77% - 1,36%, sedangkan rasio C/N berada pada kisaran 3,60 - 8,01 yang menunjukkan dominasi sumber karbon organik berasal dari produksi endogen laut (autochthonous). Rendahnya kandungan karbon organik ini diduga berkaitan dengan kondisi tutupan lamun yang termasuk dalam kategori rusak, sehingga kemampuan ekosistem dalam menyimpan karbon menjadi kurang optimal. Dengan demikian, kondisi ekosistem lamun di lokasi penelitian memerlukan perhatian dan upaya pengelolaan yang lebih baik guna meningkatkan fungsi ekologisnya, terutama sebagai penyimpan karbon biru (blue carbon).

Climate change caused by increasing greenhouse gas emissions requires effective mitigation efforts, one of which is through the role of coastal ecosystems as carbon sinks. Seagrass meadows are blue carbon ecosystems capable of absorbing and storing large amounts of carbon, particularly within sediments that function as long-term carbon sinks. However, studies regarding the sources and characteristics of organic carbon in seagrass sediment in Indonesia are still limited, creating uncertainty in blue carbon stock estimations. This condition is also found in the coastal area of Sepulu District, Bangkalan Regency, especially in Labuhan Village, which possesses seagrass meadows with distinctive environmental characteristics and is influenced by anthropogenic activities, yet lacks sufficient scientific data. Therefore, this study is important to determine the amount of organic carbon and to examine the sources and composition of organic carbon in seagrass sediments as a basis for coastal ecosystem management and climate change mitigation efforts. This research was divided into three stages: field research, laboratory analysis, and data analysis. The field research consisted of two activities, namely assessing seagrass cover area and collecting sediment samples in the coastal waters of Labuhan Village, Sepulu District, Bangkalan Regency. Laboratory analysis was conducted using the Walkley-Black method to determine sediment organic carbon content. The Loss on Ignition (LOI) method was used to identify organic carbon in seagrass biomass, while total nitrogen (TN) content was analyzed using the Kjeldahl method. The results showed that sediments in the seagrass ecosystem of Labuhan Village, Sepulu District, Bangkalan Regency contained low to very low levels of organic carbon. The organic carbon (%OC) values ranged from 0.77% to 1.36%, while the C/N ratio ranged from 3.60 to 8.01, indicating that the dominant source of organic carbon originated from marine endogenous production (autochthonous). The low organic carbon content is presumed to be related to the degraded condition of seagrass cover, resulting in a less optimal capacity of the ecosystem to store carbon. Therefore, the condition of the seagrass ecosystem in the study area requires greater attention and improved management efforts to enhance its ecological function, particularly as a blue carbon sink.
