Abstract

The internship program was conducted at PT Petrokimia Gresik, specifically in the Production Department II B, as an opportunity to apply Industrial Chemical Engineering knowledge to large-scale fertilizer production processes. The internship activities included observing the production processes of NPK Granulation, Phonska IV, and ZK; studying the Process Block Diagram, Process Flow Diagram, and Piping and Instrumentation Diagram; conducting HAZOP identification; and preparing mass and energy balances. The specific assignment focused on evaluating the performance of the dust-control system in the NPK Granulation Unit due to high dust exposure and the increasing load on the scrubber. The problem was investigated through field observations, interviews with operational personnel, literature studies, empirical calculations, and Computational Fluid Dynamics simulations using ANSYS Fluent. The results indicated that the cyclone performance under actual operating conditions was not optimal because of uneven airflow velocity distribution and inconsistent centrifugal forces, causing fine particles to be carried toward the outlet. The cyclone efficiency under the initial condition was 72.39% based on empirical calculations and 76.5% based on CFD simulations. The installation of a duct reducer was recommended to reduce the inlet cross-sectional area and increase the airflow velocity from 8.5 to 15.5 m/s. Under this condition, the empirical efficiency increased to 79.36%, while the simulation showed that 25,889 particles were trapped and only 594 particles escaped. Therefore, the duct reducer offers a simple and applicable technical solution for improving cyclone separation performance without modifying the main equipment design.
