Abstract

Precipitable Water Vapor (PWV) is an important indicator for analyzing tropospheric dynamics and weather potential in tropical regions such as Palangkaraya City, which is characterized by diverse land cover and extensive peatland areas. This study aims to extract and analyze the spatial and temporal distribution of PWV using the Multi-Temporal Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (MT-InSAR) method based on Sentinel-1 (C-band) and ALOS PALSAR-2 (L-band) imagery during the 2021–2022 period. Data processing was carried out through atmospheric phase separation, conversion of interferometric phase into Zenith Wet Delay (ZWD), generation of Short Wavelength Delay (SWD), Long Wavelength Delay (LWD), and Elevation Dependent Delay (EDD), and integration with Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) data to obtain absolute PWV. ERA5, SRTM DEM, and CHIRPS datasets were used as supporting data. The results show that the MT-InSAR method successfully reconstructed temporal PWV variations that were relatively consistent with GNSS observations. The Sentinel-1-derived PWV values ranged from 51,19-68,25 mm, while the ALOS PALSAR-2 derived PWV values ranged from 49,01-65,43 mm. The GNSS-derived PWV, used as the reference dataset, ranged from 52,48-69,99 mm. Validation against the GNSS observations demonstrated good agreement for both InSAR-derived PWV estimates, with differences ranging from 0,015 to 11,500 mm for Sentinel-1 and from 0,373 to 11,849 mm for ALOS PALSAR-2. Correlation analysis revealed a positive but weak relationship between PWV and CHIRPS rainfall, with correlation coefficients of 0,1412 for Sentinel-1 and 0,2718 for ALOS PALSAR-2. These findings demonstrate the potential of MT-InSAR for spatial and temporal monitoring of atmospheric water vapor in tropical regions.
