Abstract

Methylene blue (MB) dye wastewater is one of the pollutants that is difficult to degrade naturally, necessitating the development of effective treatment methods, one of which is photocatalysis. This study aimed to investigate the effect of varying the amount of de-oiled bleaching earth (DBE) on the characteristics and photocatalytic activity of DBE/ZnO/Co₃O₄ composites for the degradation of methylene blue. The composites were synthesized with DBE contents of 0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20%, and subsequently characterized using X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Scanning Electron Microscopy-Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (SEM-EDX), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET), and UV-Vis (UV-Vis). The photocatalytic activity was evaluated using a 10 ppm methylene blue solution under UV irradiation for 150 minutes. The XRD results confirmed the successful formation of the composite without the presence of additional impurity phases. FTIR analysis verified the characteristic functional groups of the composite, while BET analysis revealed that all samples exhibited a mesoporous structure, with the lowest specific surface area of 55.454 m²/g obtained by the DZCO 20% sample. The photocatalytic performance demonstrated that the DZCO 5% composite exhibited the highest photocatalytic activity, achieving a methylene blue degradation efficiency of 96.74% and followed zero-order kinetics, with an R² value of 0.717.
