Abstract
======================================================================================================================================
Kampung Inspirasi Lamongan is one of the areas with salty and hard groundwater/well water, with a total dissolved solids concentration of 2,310 mg/L, Total Coliforms (39 CFU/100 mL), Fe (0.286 mg/L), Mn (0.291 mg/L), Pb (0.0131 mg/L), and Al (1.2 mg/L). To meet the need for clean water and drinking water, a treatment system such as a reverse osmosis membrane filter is required. To improve efficiency and reduce the system’s workload, pre-treatment with zeolite (to remove TDS and Pb) and manganese greensand (to remove Fe, Mn, and some TC) is necessary. This is what motivated the researchers to implement reverse osmosis technology with rapid sand filter pre-treatment to convert brackish groundwater into clean, potable water. The objective of this study is to determine the effect of variations in the thickness and particle size of the filter media (zeolite and manganese greensand) on the removal efficiency of the RO system, as well as to assess the effectiveness and optimal use of a mixed media of zeolite and manganese greensand as pre-treatment for the RO system to convert well water in Kampung Inspirasi into potable water.
The method used was quantitative. Water sampling was conducted using purposive random sampling, in which tap water samples were collected (at random) from a dug well at the Kampung Inspirasi Lamongan tourist site. This study is an experiment using a pretest-post test design. Drinking water parameters were measured before (to determine the characteristics of the water samples) and after treatment (through the pretreatment process and the RO system). Data analysis consisted of descriptive analysis (comparing the results with quality standards or secondary data classifications, as well as scoring). The independent variables used were variations in pre-treatment, including variations in the thickness (cm) of the Zeolite:Manganese greensand mixed media (20 cm:30 cm and 30 cm:20 cm) and variations in particle size (20 mesh and 30 mesh).
The descriptive analysis scoring results show that the combination with a thickness of (Z30cm:MG20cm) has a higher score, meaning that the use of a mixed filter medium with a higher zeolite content leads to better removal efficiency. The variation in particle size (30 mesh) yielded a higher score, indicating that differences in particle size can affect removal efficiency. Variation 2 was found to be the most optimal for improving water quality to make it suitable for drinking, with the best removal percentages for TDS, TC, Fe, Mn, Al, and Pb obtained in the following order: (97.82%; 100%; 78.48%; 88.46%; 73%; 100%).
