Abstract

The accuracy of hydrodynamic parameter estimation plays a crucial role in determining the accuracy of a ship's mathematical model for predicting its maneuvering characteristics and dynamic response. This study aims to estimate the hydrodynamic parameters of an Extended SIGMA Corvette equipped with a Twin-Propeller Twin-Rudder (TPTR) propulsion system using the Wide-Array of Nonlinear Dynamics Approximation (WyNDA) method. The ship's mathematical model is formulated based on the Maneuvering Modeling Group (MMG) approach, which considers the forces and moments acting on the hull, propeller, and rudder. The model is assumed to have two degrees of freedom and is subsequently discretized for numerical implementation. The WyNDA method is then employed by utilizing a set of nonlinear basis functions and an adaptive observer to identify the system parameters online using data obtained from free-running model tests. Simulations are conducted using position data converted into the ECEF and ENU coordinate systems. The simulation results demonstrate that the WyNDA method is capable of estimating unknown parameters, including the hydrodynamic parameters. This finding is supported by the validation of the simulated state variables and measured trajectory data along the x- and y-axes (ECEF) as well as the e- and n-axes (ENU), yielding RMSE values of 0.046610 and 0.081868, respectively.
