Abstract

Nickel is a strategic metal that plays a crucial role in the global energy transition. Indonesia holds the world’s largest nickel ore reserves, totaling 72 million tons. The majority of Indonesia’s nickel production comes from laterite nickel, which is abundant in eastern Indonesia. The laterite nickel profile consists of several zones: limonite, saprolite, and bedrock. One of the stages used in laterite nickel exploration is geophysical surveying. The application of geophysical methods such as Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT) can identify variations in subsurface resistivity values. The purpose of this study is to identify the distribution of resistivity values and to model the distribution of the thickness of the limonite and saprolite zones. This ERT study applied a Dipole – Dipole configuration across 8 ERT lines with two variations in line length 235 meters and 200 meters to determine the laterite nickel profile based on 2D subsurface resistivity cross-sections in the study area, using 10 borehole data points to validate the ERT interpretation. Based on the results of ERT data processing, the resistivity distribution for the laterite nickel profile in the study area is classified as follows: limonite (0 m – 90 m), saprolite (90 m – 400 m), and bedrock (90 m – 1992 m). The results of validating the ERT interpretation against borehole data using the Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE) method show that the ERT interpretations of the limonite bottom and saprolite bottom have respective percentages of 32% and 39%, so both results are categorized as reasonable forecasts. Results of the 3D model visualization showing the thickness of the dominant lateritic nickel profile zone in the western part of the study area. In the distribution map of laterite nickel profile thickness, the limonite layer has an average thickness of 3.7 meters and the saprolite layer has an average thickness of 13.6 meters, distributed throughout the study area.
