Abstract

In coal-fired power plants, the buildup of slag and fouling on boiler walls can reduce heat transfer efficiency and increase fuel consumption. A commonly used cleaning method is the soot blower; however, this method has limitations because cleaning is localized, requires a large amount of energy, and has the potential to cause erosion in boiler tubes. As an alternative, the Detonation Wave System was developed as a cleaning system based on pressure waves generated by the controlled deflagration of a mixture of propane gas and pressurized air. This thesis designs an automatic control system using a Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) and a Control (HMI) with a cascade method. The system was designed to manage the sequence of operations, ranging from standby, piston close, fuel filling, air filling, ignition, piston open, flushing, to restart delay. The system also includes calculations for fuel and air set points, pressure sensor scaling, as well as interlocks and fault detection mechanisms for safety protection. The design and simulation results show that the control system can execute the operational cycle of the detonation wave system automatically, sequentially, and safely. The integration of the PLC and HMI was successfully carried out, allowing the process status, pressure, and system conditions to be monitored in real time. Thus, this design can serve as the basis for developing an automation system for the detonation wave system as an alternative method for slag removal in coal-fired power plant boilers.
