Abstract

Tides are influenced by the gravitational forces of the Moon and the Sun as well as the morphological characteristics of coastal waters, such as depth and channel constriction, which can lead to spatial variations in tidal characteristics and types. The western part of the Madura Strait has a complex morphology that potentially results in spatial differences in tidal types. This study aims to analyze the spatial variability of tidal types in the region through hydrodynamic modeling. The simulation was conducted using Delft3D with a grid resolution of 200 × 200 meters over a one-year period, utilizing GEBCO bathymetric data, ECMWF wind data, and tidal constituents from the TPXO model. The model results were validated using observed tidal data from the Geospatial Information Agency (BIG) station in Surabaya, yielding a Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) of 0.18 m, indicating good model performance. The model outputs were further analyzed using harmonic analysis with the T-Tide program to obtain the amplitudes and phases of the main tidal constituents (M2, S2, K1, and O1), which were then used to construct co-range maps and tidal type maps based on Formzahl values. The results show that the amplitude of K1 ranges from 0.4 to 0.5 m, O1 from 0.2 to 0.3 m, M2 from 0.25 to 0.50 m, and S2 from 0 to 0.40 m. Phase propagation patterns indicate that diurnal constituents (K1 and O1) originate from two directions, namely the eastern Madura Strait and the Java Sea, while semidiurnal constituents (M2 and S2) propagate from east to west. Spatial mapping results indicate that the study area is dominated by mixed tidal types with both diurnal and semidiurnal dominance, with formzahl values ranging from 0.75 to 2.25.
