Abstract

Korosi pada baja ASTM A36 dalam lingkungan NaCl 3,5% merupakan permasalahan signifikan, sehingga ekstrak kulit singkong (Manihot esculenta) diusulkan sebagai inhibitor ramah lingkungan. Penelitian ini bertujuan mengevaluasi kinerja ekstrak kulit singkong sebagai inhibitor korosi baja ASTM A36 dalam media NaCl 3,5% serta mengkaji mekanisme inhibisinya melalui pendekatan elektrokimia dan karakterisasi permukaan. Metode meliputi preparasi dan ekstraksi kulit singkong, variasi konsentrasi inhibitor 0-550 ppm, pengujian kehilangan berat, polarisasi potensiodinamik (PDP), spektroskopi impedansi elektrokimia (EIS), analisis GC-MS, serta pengamatan AFM dan SEM. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa peningkatan konsentrasi inhibitor meningkatkan efisiensi hambatan korosi, dengan optimum pada 550 ppm. Pada konsentrasi ini, laju korosi berdasarkan PDP menurun dari 2,0225 mmpy menjadi 0,26465 mmpy dengan efisiensi 86,91%, sedangkan EIS menunjukkan kenaikan resistansi polarisasi (Rp) dari 13,449 Ω menjadi 619,08 Ω dengan efisiensi proteksi 97,83%. Pengujian perendaman 30 hari menunjukkan laju korosi sampel 550 ppm sebesar 0,04371 mmpy, dibandingkan blanko 0,21808 mmpy, dengan efisiensi inhibisi 79,95% serta stabilitas proteksi selama pengujian. Hasil SEM menunjukkan permukaan baja lebih halus, homogen, dan minim produk korosi dibandingkan blanko. Ekstrak kulit singkong tergolong mixed-type inhibitor yang menghambat reaksi anodik dan katodik, dengan ΔG°ads sebesar -21,41 kJ/mol yang menunjukkan mekanisme adsorpsi campuran, yaitu fisisorpsi dan kemisorpsi. Ekstrak kulit singkong berpotensi sebagai inhibitor korosi hijau yang efektif, efisien, dan durabel untukbaja ASTM A36 dalam media NaCl 3,5%.

Corrosion of ASTM A36 steel in a 3.5% NaCl environment is a significant problem, so cassava peel extract (Manihot esculenta) is proposed as an environmentally friendly inhibitor. This study aimed to evaluate the performance of cassava peel extract as a corrosion inhibitor for ASTM A36 steel in 3.5% NaCl medium and to investigate its inhibition mechanism through electrochemical approaches and surface characterization. The methods included preparation and extraction of cassava peels, variation of inhibitor concentration from 0–550 ppm, weight loss, PDP, EIS, GC-MS analysis, AFM and SEM observations. The results showed that increasing inhibitor concentration improved corrosion inhibition efficiency, with the optimum performance obtained at 550 ppm. At this concentration, the corrosion rate based on PDP decreased from 2.0225 mmpy to 0.26465 mmpy with an efficiency of 86.91%, while EIS showed an increase in polarization resistance (Rp) from 13.449 Ω to 619.08 Ω with a protection efficiency of 97.83%. The 30-day immersion test showed that the corrosion rate of the 550 ppm sample was 0.04371 mmpy, compared to 0.21808 mmpy for the blank, with an inhibition efficiency of 79.95% and stable protection throughout the test period. SEM results showed that the steel surface was smoother, more homogeneous, and had fewer corrosion products than the blank. Cassava peel extract was classified as a mixed-type inhibitor that suppresses both anodic and cathodic reactions, with a ΔG°ads value of -21.41 kJ/mol, indicating a mixed adsorption mechanism involving physisorption and chemisorption. Therefore, cassava peel extract has potential as an effective, efficient, and durable green corrosion inhibitor for ASTM A36 steel in 3.5% NaCl medium.
