Abstract

Testing instruments in material testing laboratories play an important role in ensuring the accuracy of measurement results and the reliability of testing data. Instrument failure or degradation in measurement system performance may lead to deviations in test results, which can potentially affect product quality and the reliability of testing processes. Therefore, an analytical approach is required to evaluate the potential failure of testing instruments as well as the capability of their measurement systems. This study aims to analyze the potential failure of laboratory testing instruments using the Fuzzy Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (Fuzzy FMEA) method and to evaluate measurement system capability using Measurement System Analysis (MSA) with the Gage Repeatability and Reproducibility (GRR) approach. The objects of this study include five testing instruments: Thickness Gauge, Roughness Tester, Tensile Tester, Density Tester, and Chromium Analyzer. The results of the Fuzzy FMEA analysis indicate that the Roughness Tester has the highest potential risk with a Fuzzy Risk Priority Number (FRPN) value of 8.93, followed by the Chromium Analyzer with a value of 8.20, Tensile Tester with 6.40, Thickness Gauge with 5.47, and Density Tester with 3.33. Validation using historical operational data shows that instruments with higher FRPN values tend to exhibit higher frequencies of operational failures. The results of the Measurement System Analysis indicate that all instruments still have acceptable measurement system capability, with %GRR values below the 30% threshold. Based on the evaluation results, this study proposes adjustments to the calibration intervals of the instruments by considering the potential failure risk of the instruments as well as the stability of their measurement systems. This approach is expected to assist laboratories in improving the effectiveness of instrument calibration management while maintaining the reliability of testing results.
