Abstract

Liquid residue from the agar industry based on Gracilaria sp. has potential to be utilized as a raw material for biofertilizer because it still contains organic matter and nutrients. This study aimed to analyze the potential of Gracilaria sp. residue as a biofertilizer substrate, evaluate its bioconversion process by Crypthecodinium cohnii, and assess the effect of its application on pakcoy growth and soil chemical properties. The biofertilizer was produced through fermentation and tested on pakcoy using three treatments: biofertilizer, conventional fertilizer, and no fertilizer. The results showed that the liquid residue of the Gracilaria sp. agar industry still contained organic carbon of 229 mg/L, indicating its potential as a fermentation substrate. During fermentation, the pH of the medium decreased from highly alkaline to acidic conditions, and 14 days of fermentation produced the most visually stable biofertilizer. Biofertilizer application resulted in the best pakcoy growth compared to conventional fertilizer and no fertilizer. In soil, the biofertilizer treatment produced the highest organic C content of 2.70% and a C/N ratio of 43, indicating an increase in soil organic matter. Therefore, Gracilaria sp. agar industry residue has potential to be utilized as a biofertilizer to support pakcoy growth and improve soil chemical properties.
