Abstract

Generation Z’s media consumption patterns, characterized by a preference for visual, multimodal, and interactive content, have encouraged innovation in the development of cultural products that support the preservation of local identity while enhancing the value of the creative economy. This study aims to develop a visual adaptation of the narrative-verbal book Menapis Kisah Sehaluan dari Pesisir dan Kepulauan as a cultural literacy medium that aligns with the literacy preferences of Generation Z. The research employed a combination of literature review, existing studies analysis, observation, interviews, experimental design research, in-depth interviews, and user testing. The design process was guided by the concepts of visual adaptation, intersemiotic translation, Dual Coding Theory, and visual communication design principles. The final outcome is a printed visual book that combines narrative text, illustrations, documentary imagery, typography, a structured layout, and a color palette inspired by coastal and archipelagic environments. The results of user testing indicate that the integration of verbal and visual elements improves readability, information comprehension, and readers’ emotional engagement with local cultural content. This visual adaptation contributes to the preservation and dissemination of local culture while demonstrating the potential of books as creative economy products that are relevant to the literacy characteristics of Generation Z.
