Abstract

Young people in Queensland's youth justice system often have experiences of trauma and unmet support needs, which can make traditional support processes feel challenging or difficult to engage with. This project investigates how trauma-informed principles of safety, choice, and trust can be applied to frontend design for a digital platform that supports these young people through a personalised AI avatar companion. This Final Project focuses on the user experience design and frontend implementation, including the homepage, avatar builder, and mood check-in features developed using an agile, sprint-based approach with Next.js, React, and Tailwind CSS. Key design decisions included supporting both anonymous and authenticated users without limiting access to core features, enabling avatar personalisation regardless of login status, and making emotional check-ins optional rather than required. This project applied trauma-informed principles to the design of a digital interface by focusing on practical decisions around user choice, personalisation, and access. Future evaluation with the target user group would help determine whether these choices create the intended user experience.
