Abstract

Jakarta, as a city with a high population density, limited land availability, and significant seismic vulnerability, requires the design of high-rise buildings with lateral force-resisting systems that satisfy earthquake-resistant building criteria. One commonly adopted approach is the dual system, which combines shear walls and moment-resisting frames designed to work together in resisting lateral loads. This undergraduate thesis compares the performance of an existing reinforced concrete structure with a modified steel–concrete composite structure incorporating a Steel Plate Shear Wall (SPSW) system. In the modified building, steel infill plates with thicknesses ranging from 3 to 6 mm were used. The SPSWs were installed at four locations along the building perimeter. The use of SPSWs in the 21-story office building in Jakarta resulted in significant changes in the structural behavior. The modified structure exhibited a 49.06% reduction in dead load and a 38.58% reduction in total structural weight compared with the existing structure. The cost of the superstructure increased by 47.85%, while the foundation cost decreased by 52.64%, resulting in an overall construction cost increase of 30.84%. The fundamental structural period increased by 9.82% in the X direction and 2.04% in the Y direction. Based on the response spectrum analysis, the implementation of SPSWs reduced the base shear by 47.68% in the X direction and 46.52% in the Y direction. The interstory drift increased by 15.05% in the X direction and 10.75% in the Y direction. Overall, the use of SPSWs improved structural efficiency by significantly reducing the building weight and seismic forces. Although the structural period and interstory drift increased, the drift values remained within the allowable limits specified by SNI 1726:2019.
