Abstract

Mental health is a vital aspect of human well-being, essential for optimal functioning. However, mental health disorders have emerged as a global crisis affecting 970 million people, with adolescents representing one of the most vulnerable populations. In Indonesia, the Basic Health Research (Riset Kesehatan Dasar) recorded an increase in the prevalence of emotional mental disorders among individuals aged 15 and older, rising from 6.0% in 2013 to 9.8% in 2018. Meanwhile, the Indonesia - National Adolescent Mental Health Survey (I-NAMHS) revealed that one in three adolescents aged 10 to 17 (34.9%) experienced at least one mental health disorder within the past 12 months. This condition is triggered by poor family relationships, high academic pressure, conflicts related to spirituality, and social pressure, and is exacerbated by the low utilization of professional mental health services due to geographic constraints, costs, stigma, and lack of support. To address these challenges, this study develops Suarnala, a web-based chatbot as an initial mental health support tool for middle adolescents in Indonesia. The chatbot focuses on depression, self-harm, eating disorders, and sleep disorders, and is designed to meet users' initial informational, educational, and therapeutic needs without replacing professional services. The evaluation results show that RAGAS scores exceeded the minimum target of 0.70, psychologist validation achieved an average score of 3.6/4.0 with two self-harm responses revised and later reconfirmed, and usability testing with 142 respondents achieved a CUQ score of 81.1 ± 13.6 with a median of 82.8. These results indicate that this chatbot was positively received as an early mental health support tool for adolescents, although improvements are still needed in knowledge coverage, response speed, interface design, and user input understanding.
