Abstract

Spur dike is one of the river training structures used to control flow patterns and reduce the potential for bank erosion. In curved channels, particularly with a 90° bend, the interaction between secondary flow, spur dike structures, and bed sediment generates complex flow and scouring patterns. This study aims to investigate the effect of variations in spur dike orientation angle (θ) relative to the flow direction and the spur dike placement angle along the bend (θp) on scouring characteristics under subcritical flow conditions. The experiments were conducted in a laboratory flume with a 90° bend, using both impermeable and permeable spur dikes in each test. The spur dike orientation angles tested were θ = 75°, 90°, and 105°, while the placement angles along the bend were θp = 30°, 60°, and 90°. The flow conditions were steady, with variations in the Froude number within the subcritical range. Flow velocity measurements were carried out using a current meter, while the maximum scour depth and scouring patterns were measured after equilibrium conditions were achieved. The results of this study are expected to demonstrate the influence of the combined effects of orientation angle, placement angle, and spur dike porosity on the maximum scour depth. This research is expected to contribute to the development of more effective spur dike designs for curved channels.
