Abstract

The interaction between fluid flow and solid bodies is one of the fundamental phenomena in engineering, particularly for flows around bluff bodies such as circular cylinders. This interaction induces flow separation, leading to vortex shedding, which increases drag force, fluctuating lift force, and may cause structural vibrations. One of the most widely adopted passive flow control methods to mitigate these phenomena is the installation of a splitter plate downstream of the cylinder. The effectiveness of this method is strongly influenced by the geometric parameters of the splitter plate, particularly its length and thickness. Therefore, a comprehensive investigation is required to determine the optimum configuration for improving aerodynamic performance. This study aims to investigate the effects of splitter plate length and thickness on the flow characteristics around a circular cylinder and to identify the optimum configuration. Numerical simulations were performed using ANSYS Fluent 2025 R1 with a two-dimensional unsteady flow approach and the k–ω Shear Stress Transport (SST) turbulence model. The splitter plate length ratios (L/D) investigated were 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0, while the thickness ratios (T/D) were 0.08 and 0.14 with a gap ratio (G/D) of 0.14 for a circular cylinder with a diameter of 36 mm. The evaluated parameters included the pressure coefficient (Cp) distribution, velocity profile, drag coefficient (Cd), fluctuating lift coefficient (Cl′), Strouhal number (St), and flow-field visualizations consisting of static pressure, velocity magnitude, streamlines, turbulent intensity, and vorticity magnitude contours. The results indicate that the splitter plate configuration with L/D = 1.5 and T/D = 0.14 provides the optimum aerodynamic performance. This configuration increases the base pressure coefficient (Cbp) from −1.43 for the plain cylinder to −1.06, reduces the drag coefficient (Cd) from 1.31 to 1.04 (20.61%), and decreases the Strouhal number (St) from 0.217 to 0.141 (35.02%). These improvements demonstrate that the selected configuration enhances the base pressure, delays vortex shedding, narrows the wake region, and produces a more stable flow field, resulting in a more effective drag reduction than the other configurations.
