Abstract

The challenge of marketing a product lies in consumers' ability to understand its value prior to purchase. Products such as beauty care products, food, perfumes, and fashion items are classified as experience goods, whose quality and value are difficult to evaluate before actual use. This condition creates product fit uncertainty, referring to consumers' uncertainty regarding whether a product matches their preferences. One strategy to reduce this uncertainty is the provision of product testers. However, this strategy incurs additional costs for the parties involved in the supply chain. Therefore, this study develops an analytical model based on game theory to establish a theoretical framework for product tester strategies from a supply chain perspective, aiming to provide insights for manufacturers and retailers in determining strategies that maximize profits. Four scenarios are developed in this study: Scenario W, in which consumers do not receive product testers from either party; Scenario X, in which the manufacturer bears the cost of providing product testers; Scenario Y, in which the retailer bears the cost; and Scenario Z, in which the manufacturer and the retailer each bear their respective product tester costs. The model is solved using the Stackelberg Game approach. The results indicate that the optimal decisions depend on the parameter settings. From the retailer's perspective, Scenario X is consistently the most profitable strategy. From the manufacturer's perspective, Scenario Z is the most profitable strategy when production costs are relatively low, whereas Scenario Y becomes the preferred strategy when production costs are relatively high. Furthermore, the results reveal that no condition yields the most preferable outcome for both parties simultaneously. Game analysis further shows that the equilibrium outcome is Scenario X, which is the most preferable outcome for the retailer but not for the manufacturer.
