Abstract

The national target for increasing the share of renewable energy has encouraged the utilization of Indonesia’s marine current energy resources, which are generally characterized by relatively low flow velocities. The Savonius turbine is considered a promising technology for such conditions due to its ability to operate at low tip speed ratios (TSR). However, its energy conversion efficiency remains relatively limited. This study aims to enhance the hydrodynamic performance of a Savonius turbine through blade surface modification using a groove structure inspired by the geometry of a clamshell. Experimental investigations were conducted in a towing tank employing a motor-control method to evaluate torque, power output, power coefficient, torque coefficient, and self-starting characteristics. The results demonstrate that the Clamshell 3 configuration achieved the best overall performance among all tested models. The maximum values of Cp and Ct increased by 7.67% compared with the base model. Furthermore, the self-starting capability was significantly improved, as indicated by a 141% increase in the initial rotational speed. These findings suggest that the proposed clamshell-inspired groove configuration effectively enhances the aerodynamic interaction between the flow and blade surface, leading to improved torque generation and overall turbine performance under low-current conditions.
