Abstract

The modern animal feed industry requires a sustainable and halal source of omega-3 fatty acids (DHA) as a substitute for fish oil. Chicken feed is produced using the whole-cell biomass of the microalga Schizochytrium sp., which is formulated with corn as the base feed. Schizochytrium sp. is cultivated heterotrophically through fed batch fermentation to achieve high cell density and DHA accumulation. The biomass is harvested via centrifugation and processed using spray drying integrated with microencapsulation to protect the DHA from oxidation, resulting in a stable microalgal meal. This whole-cell biomass approach allows for the direct integration of the microalgal meal (rich in DHA, protein, and minerals) into the corn-based feed formulation, thereby eliminating the need for complex and costly oil extraction. This method offers a simpler, more cost-effective, and sustainable solution for producing nutrient-rich functional chicken feed.
