Abstract

The significant development of the manufacturing industry in Indonesia has resulted in an increase in the volume of solid waste that has the potential to pollute the environment. Therefore, special attention and handling are needed in the management of various wastes produced, one of which is conveyor belt cutting waste. The characteristics of conveyor belts, which are strong, abrasion-resistant, and non-biodegradable, often result in them ending up in landfills (TPA), without any initiative to carry out sustainable utilization. In this study, the author intends to explore conveyor belt waste, especially cutting waste, so that it can be an alternative material that has the potential to be used as an apparel product design in the form of a sustainable women's handbag, in collaboration with CV. Sekundo Berjaya as a partner. This study will use a Material Driven Design (MDD) approach that will focus on understanding the characteristics of the material, exploring material experiences to produce a product prototype. The process in this study includes material observation, field studies, in-depth interviews with stakeholders, visual exploration, design development, and prototype creation and testing. The exploration conducted resulted in the fact that conveyor belt cutting waste has great potential to be used as bag material, supported by functional values (such as resistance to water, abrasion and cuts) and strong aesthetics, although the exploration results show limitations in terms of flexibility and thermal comfort. The design of conveyor belt material bags based on cutting waste is expected to increase awareness in the apparel industry and the public about the extraordinary potential by utilizing conveyor belt industry cutting waste, along with support for the application of sustainable design principles and circular economy trends in the creative industry.
