Abstract

The evolution of modern fashion products, particularly leather clutch bags, demands the integration of aesthetics, functionality, and cultural identity representation within a single product. However, the application of the Kawung batik motif on current products is often not fully aligned with its underlying philosophical meaning. This issue backgrounds the design of a genuine leather clutch bag incorporating the Kawung batik motif using an embossing technique. This design project aims to transform the Javanese philosophy of Papat Lima Pancer into new visual motif elements that are relevant to contemporary fashion. The Kawung motif was selected due to its symmetrical, repetitive, and precise geometric structure, making it technically compatible with the leather embossing process while representing Javanese cosmological balance (Keblat Papat and Sedulur Papat). The design methodology incorporates literature study, user preference analysis, material analysis, competitor product analysis, user needs analysis, market analysis, potential user analysis, technical experiments, prototyping, and product testing. Motif development was carried out through the stylization of representative objects of the Papat Lima Pancer philosophy combined within the Kawung framework, generating 64 motif alternatives. The final motif selection was conducted through a two-stage screening process, resulting in one final motif. Hot emboss experiments on natural milled leather established optimal parameters at a temperature of 130°C, a duration of 15 seconds, and a clear plastic film finishing to achieve sharp relief definition without damaging the leather's natural texture. Design implementation resulted in three clutch product series (Nara Series, Rona Series, and Sora Series) with unique motif placements, accompanied by complete branding elements and a philosophy card. Usability testing and business analysis (Business Model Canvas/BMC, Cost of Goods Sold/COGS calculation, and Break Even Point/BEP) confirmed that the products successfully convey premium aesthetics, formal functionality, and commercial viability. This design project demonstrates that integrating Javanese philosophy into contemporary leather accessories produces functional, aesthetic, and meaningful products as a contribution to the development of cultural heritage-based products in Indonesia's local fashion industry.
