Abstract

The FSAD ITS River Area receives Angsana leaf litter, which undergoes decomposition with the assistance of benthic macroinvertebrates. This study aimed to determine the decomposition rate of Angsana leaves, assess the abundance and composition of macroinvertebrates, and evaluate the effect of macroinvertebrate abundance on leaf decomposition. Dried leaf samples were weighed to obtain their initial mass, placed in mesh bags, and submerged in the river using baskets. After each immersion period, the leaves were retrieved, washed, oven-dried, and reweighed to determine the decomposition rate. Macroinvertebrates retained on the sieve during leaf washing were collected and identified. Supporting environmental parameters included water temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO), pH, nitrate, phosphate, and sediment total organic carbon (TOC). The decomposition rate decreased with increasing immersion time, from 0,070–0,077 g/day in week 2 to 0,038–0,040 g/day in week 4 and 0,025–0,027 g/day in week 6. Two-way ANOVA showed that only immersion duration significantly affected the decomposition rate (p < 0,001), whereas sampling site and the interaction between the two factors had no significant effect (p > 0,05). Macroinvertebrate abundance increased over time, with the highest abundance recorded at TS 1, and the community was dominated by the family Chironomidae (98,1%). The correlation analysis revealed a weak negative relationship between macroinvertebrate abundance and leaf decomposition rate (r = -0,423), which was not statistically significant (p = 0,263). This weak influence and insignificant relationship are due to the fact that the macroinvertebrate community is dominated by Chironomidae, which act as gathering-collectors. Therefore, the leaf decomposition process is influenced more by leaching and microbial activity than by leaf fragmentation by macroinvertebrates.
