Abstract
Figma banyak digunakan mahasiswa untuk menghasilkan berbagai desain grafis karena mendukung kolaborasi berbasis cloud, tetapi fitur bawaannya belum selalu mampu memenuhi kebutuhan visual yang spesifik, kompleks, fleksibel, dan presisi. Penelitian ini bertujuan mengidentifikasi keterbatasan fitur bawaan Figma serta menganalisis strategi workaround yang diterapkan mahasiswa desainer grafis melalui kombinasi objek desain, fitur bawaan, dan plugin. Penelitian menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dengan desain studi kasus. Data dikumpulkan melalui wawancara semi-terstruktur dan observasi lapangan melalui berbagi layar terhadap 20 mahasiswa desainer grafis yang dipilih secara purposive sampling, kemudian dianalisis menggunakan teknik open coding. Hasil penelitian mengidentifikasi 17 fitur terbatas yang dikelompokkan ke dalam tujuh kategori, yaitu efek visual, foto atau gambar, warna dan gradien, perspektif dan mockup, tekstur, tipografi, serta vektor. Ditemukan 26 variasi kombinasi yang membentuk lima pola strategi utama, yaitu perubahan tampilan objek, perubahan struktur objek, kombinasi objek dengan efek visual, penggunaan plugin sebagai fitur tambahan, dan penggunaan plugin sebagai otomatisasi. Hubungan antara keterbatasan dan strategi bersifat banyak-ke-banyak karena satu fitur dapat diatasi melalui beberapa strategi, sedangkan satu strategi dapat diterapkan pada beberapa fitur. Penelitian menyimpulkan bahwa workaround merupakan bentuk adaptasi pengguna yang dapat berkembang menjadi pola kerja berulang untuk mempertahankan kelancaran proses desain, meskipun dapat menambah kompleksitas, mengurangi kemudahan revisi, atau menimbulkan ketergantungan pada plugin.

Figma is widely used by students to produce various graphic design outputs because it supports cloud-based collaboration; however, its built-in features do not always accommodate specific, complex, flexible, and precise visual requirements. This study aims to identify the limitations of Figma’s built-in features and analyze the workaround strategies applied by student graphic designers through combinations of design objects, built-in features, and plugins. This study employed a qualitative approach with a case study design. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and screen-sharing observations involving 20 student graphic designers selected through purposive sampling and were analyzed using open coding. The findings identified 17 limited features grouped into seven categories: visual randoms, photos or images, colors and gradients, Perspective and mockups, Textures, typography, and vectors. The study also identified 26 workaround variations classified into five main strategy patterns: modifying object appearance, modifying object structure, combining objects with visual randoms, using plugins as additional features, and using plugins for automation. The relationship between feature limitations and workaround strategies was many-to-many, as one limitation could be addressed through several strategies, while one strategy could be applied to multiple features. This study concludes that workarounds represent adaptive user practices that may develop into recurring design routines, although they can increase workflow complexity, reduce editability, and create dependence on plugins.
