Abstract

Managing the inventory of spare parts with high operational criticality is essential in urban bus operations, as the unavailability of critical spare parts when needed may result in vehicle downtime, leading to financial losses for the company. This study aims to determine appropriate inventory policy parameters for critical spare parts. Based on the ABC–VED Matrix classification, ten spare parts categorized as AV, BV, and CV with available historical demand data were selected for further analysis. These spare parts were analyzed using the Min–Max method to determine the initial inventory policy parameters for each item. The resulting parameters were subsequently evaluated through Monte Carlo simulation. The simulation results indicate that most spare parts achieved low stockout rates, with several items experiencing zero stockouts, thereby ensuring the continuity of fleet operations. However, two spare parts, namely the Rod-Self Adjusting Leveling Valve and the Giti 295/80R22.5 GSR225 Tire, exhibited stockout rates of 21.4% and 16.7%, respectively, resulting in downtime costs. To address this issue, the maximum stock level of each item was increased by one unit. The proposed adjustment successfully eliminated stockouts for both spare parts, with only a relatively small increase in holding costs. The findings demonstrate that the integration of the ABC–VED Matrix, the Min–Max method, and Monte Carlo simulation provides an effective inventory policy for identifying critical spare parts, evaluating inventory performance, and minimizing the risk of fleet downtime through appropriate inventory parameter adjustments.
