Abstract

The fashion industry is increasingly moving toward the exploration of craftsmanship, natural materials, and texture as important aesthetic values in product design. However, the utilization of natural wool fibers and the application of the nuno felting technique in handbag products are still very limited in Indonesia, despite the availability of local Dombos wool as a potential natural material. This study aims to develop a nuno felting technique using Dombos wool as a medium for expressing textural aesthetics in women's handbag design. The research methods include literature review, interviews, observations, user surveys, and material
exploration using the Material Driven Design (MDD) approach supported by the SensAE tool to identify users' visual, tactile, and emotional perceptions of the material. The results show that tulle fabric has the strongest bonding ability with wool fibers, producing a stable nuno felt
material suitable for handbag applications. The material exploration also revealed several aesthetic characteristics, including soft color gradation, three-dimensional textures created through the heated shibori technique, and organic wrinkle forms that become the visual identity of the material. Based on the SensAE analysis, the material is perceived as fluffy, soft, lightweight, and rich in texture, which became the foundation for developing the design concept. These findings were implemented into three women's handbag collections, namely Fleur de Laine, Tactile Aura, and Ornate Azale, representing both tactile experiences and
textural aesthetic expressions. This study demonstrates that nuno felting has the potential to be developed as an alternative natural wool-based material for fashion products with distinctive craftsmanship and textural identity.
