Abstract

The community forestry sector, particularly the sengon wood commodity, plays a strategic role in the rural economy of East Java. However, smallholder farmers often face constraints such as limited capital, inadequate access to information, and weak bargaining positions within the supply chain. This study aims to identify the key factors influencing partnership sustainability and analyze the cause-and-effect relationships among these factors to support farmers' well-being and supply chain stability. This research employs a descriptive quantitative approach using the Decision Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL) method within a Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) framework. The research focuses on the partnership model involving sengon farmers, Bromo Mandiri Cooperative, and PT Kutai Timber Indonesia (PT KTI). Six main variables are analyzed: literacy, trust, economic structure, logistics and distribution, farmers' well-being, and supply chain stability. Primary data were obtained through assessments from 17 expert respondents representing academia, the company, the cooperative, the government, supply chain experts, and farmers. The results show that Literacy (V1) is the most dominant driving factor (D−R = +1.374), acting as the root cause within the partnership system, while Logistics and Distribution (V4) emerges as the most important factor (D+R = 25.016), serving as the central hub of the network. Supply Chain Stability (V6) is identified as the most dominant effect variable (D−R = −1.120), whereas Farmers' Well-being (V5) demonstrates passive characteristics with zero out-degree. The strongest causal relationship in the system is V4 → V6 (T = 2.271). This study recommends prioritizing interventions focused on farmer literacy programs and strengthening logistics infrastructure as the two main pillars for building a sustainable and equitable partnership.
