Abstract

This study examines the impact of the 2024 Indonesian presidential election on the stock returns of firms listed on the LQ45 index of the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX), employing an event study methodology across two distinct political event dates: the official determination of the election result by the General Elections Commission of Indonesia (KPU) on 24 April 2024, and the presidential inauguration of Prabowo Subianto on 20 October 2024. Using a sample of 45 firms over a ±10 trading day event window and a 100-day estimation period based on the market model, this research calculates Cumulative Abnormal Returns (CAR) and examines the cross-sectional determinants of those returns through multivariate regression analysis, incorporating firm size, geographic diversification, firm age, state ownership, and the moderating role of state ownership on each independent variable. The results reveal a consistently negative directional impact of both political events on CAR, consistent with political uncertainty theory and the Efficient Market Hypothesis. For the first event, the mean CAR of -0.023 was directionally negative but statistically insignificant (p = 0.138), suggesting that the market had partially anticipated the election outcome in advance. For the second event, the mean CAR of -0.019 was statistically significant at the 5% level (p = 0.045), driven by investor concerns over the unprecedented scale of the new cabinet, fiscal policy ambiguity surrounding flagship government programs, and the introduction of new policy uncertainty at the formal transfer of power. Among the firm-level variables, firm size produced a statistically significant positive effect on CAR during the first event (p = 0.035), indicating that larger firms experienced more favorable abnormal returns at the moment of electoral confirmation, while geographic diversification and firm age did not produce statistically significant effects in either event window, and firm size itself lost significance during the second event. State ownership, however, was a significant positive predictor of CAR during the first event, reflecting investors' perception of government-linked firms as political insiders benefiting from the new administration's policy agenda. The moderation analysis reveals that state ownership significantly reverses the firm size–CAR relationship during the first event, with larger state-owned firms experiencing deteriorating abnormal returns relative to their private counterparts, consistent with agency theory arguments about governance inefficiencies in large state enterprises. During the second event, state ownership significantly amplifies the positive effect of geographic diversification on CAR, suggesting that geographically diversified state-linked firms were perceived as well-positioned to capitalize on the incoming administration's national development priorities. The findings contribute to the political finance literature by documenting how political transitions in a large emerging market democracy generate event-specific and ownership-conditioned equity market reactions, and underscore the importance of state ownership as a boundary condition in explaining cross-sectional variation in abnormal returns around major political events.
