Abstract
==================================================================================================================================
The need for herbal medicine entrepreneurs to have a fast, efficient, and consistent drying process is crucial for improving product quality and sales revenue. Manual drying using sunlight, which takes a long time, has the potential to reduce the quality of raw materials due to uneven drying and can even lead to mold growth. In addition, a better drying system can also contribute to the empowerment of farmers and the surrounding community through increased productivity. This study aims to design and build a drying device for herbal medicine raw materials equipped with an automated control system. The system uses a PTC Heat Fan-based heater as a source of hot air, is equipped with a PT100 RTD temperature sensor to measure the actual temperature, and is controlled by a Siemens S7-1200 PLC. The PLC controls the PTC Heat Fan via an On/Off cycle to maintain the temperature at a predetermined setpoint. Temperature data and component status are displayed in real-time via a Haiwell HMI, allowing the drying process to be easily monitored. The resulting automated drying system maintains a consistent temperature of 50°C with a maximum overshoot of 3%. Thermal efficiency analysis confirms that a 3 kg load capacity is the most optimal operating parameter with the lowest specific energy consumption for ginger, temulawak, and turmeric. This system has been shown to significantly speed up the drying process compared to conventional methods (3 days), making it an effective technological solution.
