Abstract

memanfaatkan sifat simetri solusi.

Efficiency in solving nonlinear optimization problems is influenced by the solution representation and mathematical structure exploited. In several classes of differentialcproblems, the solution exhibits symmetry properties that can be leveraged to reduce the number of parameters, particularly when combined with representations based on global basis functions. This study proposes Symmetry-Informed Fourier Spectral (SIFS), a Fourier-coefficient optimization approach that exploits solution symmetry to reduce the number of coefficients involved. The solution is represented as a symmetry-reduced Fourier series, and its coefficients are optimized using the Newton method and the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm to minimize the residual error of the nonlinear system obtained by substituting the series into the partial differential equation (PDE). As a numerical test, the proposed method is applied to the Bratu equation as a benchmark nonlinear elliptic PDE with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions on one-, two-, and three-dimensional domains, evaluated against the analytical solution (1D) and the Symmetry-Informed Finite Difference Method (SFDM) for the two- and three-dimensional cases. The numerical results show that SIFS produces lower- and upper-branch solutions consistent with the reference in the one- and two-dimensional cases, and lower-branch solutions in the three-dimensional case, with accuracy generally better than SFDM despite requiring greater computational time due to the global and dense nature of the Fourier basis. The method also reconstructs bifurcation diagrams with pointwise errors generally smaller than SFDM, although the turning point estimate in the three-dimensional case remains less accurate. Newton and Levenberg-Marquardt yield identical solutions in terms of iteration count and accuracy, but Newton is substantially more efficient in computational time and is therefore adopted as the primary solver. The proposed symmetry-based Fourier coefficient optimization approach thus offers an accurate alternative numerical method for solving the Bratu equation, at the cost of greater computational expense compared to the symmetry-informed finite difference method.
