Abstract

This This study aims to analyze the influence of female leaders’ emotional intelligence (EI) levels on decision-making behavior and the quality of information technology (IT) investment decisions. IT investment decisions are highly complex because they involve innovation, risk, uncertainty, and various technical and business considerations. Therefore, decision quality is determined not only by technical analysis but also by the emotional characteristics and leadership behavior of decision makers, as well as their ability to involve relevant stakeholders. This study employed a qualitative phenomenological approach involving three female leaders at the managerial level from three technology-based or highly technology-dependent companies located on the island of Java. The informants were selected through purposive sampling using the criterion sampling technique. Their EI levels were measured using the Schutte Self-Report Emotional Intelligence Test administered in two rounds, resulting in high, moderate, and low EI categories. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, analyzed using Creswell’s data analysis spiral, and validated through source, time, and data collection technique triangulation. Decision quality was assessed using the six elements of the Decision Quality framework. The findings indicate that differences in EI levels influence how female leaders communicate, manage relationships, understand team members’ conditions, and respond to problems. Nevertheless, all informants predominantly demonstrated transformational leadership characteristics while applying transactional leadership behaviors under certain circumstances. The decision quality assessment showed that the informant with high EI achieved a score of 94.33%, the informant with moderate EI achieved 86%, and the informant with low EI achieved 94.33%. These findings indicate that EI fundamentally influences the decision-making process and decision quality, as supported by previous studies. However, in the context of this study, variation was identified in one informant’s results, indicating that the relationship was not entirely linear. Decision quality was also influenced by analytical capabilities, the use of decision-support tools, the completeness of information, professional experience, implementation readiness, and the working environment. Thus, EI plays a role in shaping leadership behaviour and decision-making processes, while the final quality of IT investment decisions is formed through the interaction of emotional, leadership, analytical, and organizational factors.
