Abstract

Javanese architecture is a cultural heritage that reflects the harmony between humans, nature, and In the current practice of preserving and developing traditional Javanese architecture, designers and conservators often fall into the trap of a ocular-centric approach to meet the needs of visual commodification of tourism. However, the essence of a traditional architectural space is not merely visual, but rather shaped by a multisensory atmosphere. This study aims to identify and analyze visitors’ sensory experiences in Javanese traditional houses functioning as residential spaces (Brayut Village) and public spaces (Ndalem Ngabean, Yogyakarta), compare sensory experiences across both contexts, and examine their influence on place attachment. A mixed-methods approach was employed, consisting of sensory observations and in-depth interviews in the qualitative phase, followed by questionnaires and linear regression analysis in the quantitative phase. The findings reveal that sensory experiences are strongly influenced by spatial functions. In the residential context, sensory experiences are immersive and cumulative, with olfactory stimuli playing a prominent role in evoking memories and emotional attachment. In contrast, sensory experiences in the public-space context are intensive and episodic, with auditory stimuli, particularly gamelan music, dominating the creation of cultural and atmospheric meanings. Comparison between the two cases identified two distinct sensory experience models: an immersive-cumulative model in residential settings and an intensive-episodic model in public spaces. Quantitative results indicate that each sensory dimension did not have a partially significant effect on place attachment in the two research objects. However, simultaneously, the four sensory dimensions together had a significant effect on place attachment in Brayut Tourism Village and Ndalem Ngabean. These findings indicate that place attachment in traditional Javanese architecture is formed through integrated multisensory experiences, not through the dominance of one sensory dimension separately. Therefore, preserving traditional architecture needs to consider the sustainability of the sensory ecology in addition to the physical aspects of the building.
