Abstract

The implementation of Hajj and Umrah involves high mobility within dense and dynamic environments, which often makes it difficult for families to obtain information regarding the pilgrims' whereabouts. MeccaBot has been used as a digital pilgrimage companion application; however, it does not yet provide a feature that allows families to monitor pilgrims' locations. Therefore, this study aims to design and implement a location sharing feature in the MeccaBot application. This research employs the Design Thinking method with a human- centered approach, consisting of the empathize, define, ideate, prototype, and test stages, and is limited to a single development cycle. User needs were gathered through direct interviews with three pilgrims and three family members of pilgrims during the empathize stage, and were then synthesized in the define stage as the basis for solution design. The location sharing feature was implemented using the low-code platform AppSheet, Google Apps Script as the serverless backend, and Google Sheets as the database, with an email-matching-based authorization mechanism and automated email notifications to families. Testing was conducted with six participants consisting of three pilgrims and three family members using the System Usability Scale (SUS), obtaining an average score of 75.4, which falls into the Good category. The results of this study demonstrate that the location sharing feature can be implemented and runs well within the MeccaBot application, without claiming quantitative technical security aspects.
