Abstract

Healing architecture is a design approach that views architecture as more than merely a container for activities, but as a medium capable of facilitating both physical and psychological healing. One of its underlying concepts, healing silence, emphasises the importance of tranquillity in stimulating the healing process. In indonesia, this approach is particularly relevant to safe houses for women and children who have experienced violence, as most existing facilities are adapted from residential buildings without design considerations that support recovery and well-being. This project proposes the application of healing architecture through the concept of silent threshold to create an environment that both provides protection and also supports survivors' recovery and empowerment, enabling them to reintegrate into society in a better way. The healing silence approach is implemented through the silent threshold concept using the the obscure methodology and analogy. The design process is further backed by literature review, precedent studies, and interviews with key informants, and strengthened by the principles of trauma-informed design as its evidence-based counterpart. The intersection of these two approaches forms the basis for developing design strategies that foster safety, adaptation, and the recovery process of survivors. The proposed design is realised through an interlocking building mass configuration that creates a sequence of pocket spaces functioning as transitional open spaces. These spaces serve as the silent thresholds, which are moments of pause distributed throughout the site, with the communal space acting as the central hub of shared activities. At the same time, the mass arrangement enhances visual connectivity, allowing a sense of safety to emerge through natural surveillance. The spatial experience is reinforced by the use of materials and colour palettes that emulate natural elements, such as stone, wood, and earth, together with the integration of small gardens on every floor to create a simple, warm, and calming environment. Ultimately, this project is expected to enrich the application of healing architecture while offering an alternative model for designing safe houses that is more humane, protective, and restorative.
