Abstract

The vortex tube is an alternative cooling technology with great development potential due to its capability to instantly separate a pressurized air stream into hot and cold streams without involving any moving parts or hazardous chemical refrigerants. The thermal separation performance and energy efficiency of this device are heavily influenced by the internal flow kinematics, which are controlled by the geometry of the hot exit control valve. This study aims to analyze the effect of modifying the control valve cone angle on the pressure distribution, vortex flow characteristics, cold temperature reduction (ΔTc), and isentropic cooling efficiency within a vortex tube. The method employed is a numerical simulation based on Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), comparing two variations of valve cone angles, 25° and 35°, across 11 operational points of the cold mass fraction (cold fraction, \in). The simulation results indicate that reducing the valve cone angle from 35° to 25° significantly enhances the stability of the internal back pressure and strengthens the centrifugal force of the core reverse vortex flow. The maximum cold fluid temperature reduction is consistently achieved at the minimum cold fraction condition (\in = 0.21 at point UV1). At this optimal point, the 25° valve configuration produces a cold temperature reduction of 69.07 K, which is far superior to the 35° angle which only reaches 47.59 K. In line with the actual thermal performance, the peak isentropic cooling efficiency at \in\ = 0.21 is dominated by the 25° valve angle with a value of 66.00%, whereas the 35° valve angle only records an efficiency of 46.00%. The wider angle of the 35° valve leads to a loose annular area, causing the hot fluid to escape too rapidly, weakening the vortex strength, and inducing a remixing phenomenon that degrades energy separation effectiveness. The findings of this study provide a solid theoretical foundation demonstrating that a sharp 25° cone valve is the recommended optimal geometric parameter for developing high-reliability self-sustained cooling technologies, particularly for emergency medical logistics management (such as portable vaccine/medicine storage) in infrastructure-crisis or disaster-affected regions.
