Abstract
SS304H stainless steel has been widely used for high-temperature industrial applications due to its mechanical strength and resistance to corrosion. On the other hand, the welding process affects the heat-affected zones and passive film stability thus reducing the corrosion resistance. Thus, this study aims to examine the effect of welding energy on the corrosion resistance of the self-healed SS304H and examine the possibility of re-healing the welding area by further treatment. Various types of specimen preparations have been created including as-received, heat treated, shot peened, welded and post-welded specimens. Shot peening was used to facilitate the self-healing process while the welding process has been done using two current values; 50 A and 100 A. The analysis of the results was done depending on the trend of the polarization curves, which includes the current response, the passive region and transpassive region. The results revealed that the shot peening plus 72-hour heat treatment influenced the passive region of the SS304H sample and was used for the self-healing process before welding. After welding, the results revealed that the trend of the polarization curve was towards increased current response meaning decreased corrosion resistance, specifically in case of high welding current. Treatment after welding revealed a recovery trend, specifically with the additional shot peening and 72-hour heat treatment. Generally, this study reveals that the welding energy influences the corrosion resistance of self-healed SS304H, while post-welding shot peening and heat treatment can improve the corrosion behavior of the welded sample.
