Abstract

Kepadatan penduduk di kawasan permukiman nelayan Kelurahan Bulak, Surabaya, mendorong warga melakukan adaptasi dan ekspansi ruang secara mandiri di luar kerangka formal. Pembangunan rumah susun menjadi salah satu solusi untuk mengatasi kepadatan tersebut, namun tipologi hunian formal ini perlu tetap mampu mengakomodasi praktik adaptif yang telah menjadi karakter warga setempat. Penelitian ini mengusulkan pendekatan programmed spontaneity untuk menjawab kebutuhan tersebut. Berdasarkan teori In-formalised Urban Space (Dovey & King, 2011) dan morphogenesis (Alexander, 1977; Salingaros, 2000), yang memandang formal dan informal sebagai entitas yang saling membentuk sehingga ruang formal dapat dirancang untuk mengundang adaptasi informal dalam batas yang terkontrol. Pendekatan ini dipilih karena hunian formal cenderung kaku terhadap perubahan, sementara solusi incremental housing yang ada rawan menimbulkan degradasi kualitas akibat modifikasi yang tidak terkendali. Berdasarkan pertimbangan tersebut, rancangan menggunakan sistem grid modular dengan unit hunian tetap (fixed unit) dan ruang kosong di sekelilingnya untuk ekspansi penghuni, dengan pola pertumbuhan yang disimulasikan melalui skrip parametrik Grasshopper berdasarkan klasifikasi pola adaptasi dari enam studi preseden hunian, lalu dikembangkan menjadi rancangan rumah susun pada tapak seluas 10.500 m². Sistem ini memungkinkan penghuni menambahkan ruang tanpa mengganggu integritas struktural bangunan, sehingga ruang formal tetap mengakomodasi praktik informal penghuni tanpa kehilangan keteraturannya. Penelitian ini diharapkan memberikan kontribusi praktis berupa prototipe hunian vertikal yang adaptif, sekaligus memperkaya pemahaman akademis mengenai koeksistensi formality dan informality dalam perancangan arsitektur

The high population density in the fishing settlement of Kelurahan Bulak, Surabaya, has driven residents to independently adapt and expand their living spaces beyond the formal framework. The construction of flats has become one solution to address this density, yet this formal housing typology still needs to accommodate the adaptive practices that have long characterized the local residents. This research proposes a programmed spontaneity approach to respond to this need. Based on the theory of in-formalised urban space (Dovey & King, 2011) and morphogenesis (Alexander, 1977; Salingaros, 2000), which view formal and informal as mutually shaping entities, formal space can be designed to invite informal adaptation within controlled limits. This approach was chosen because formal housing tends to be rigid toward change, while existing incremental housing solutions are prone to causing quality degradation due to uncontrolled modification. Based on these considerations, the design employs a modular grid system with fixed housing units and surrounding empty spaces for residents' expansion, with the growth pattern simulated through a Grasshopper parametric script based on the classification of adaptation patterns from six housing precedent studies, which was then developed into a flats design on a 10,500 m² site. This system allows residents to add space without compromising the building's structural integrity, so that formal space still accommodates residents' informal practices without losing its order. This research is expected to provide a practical contribution in the form of an adaptive vertical housing prototype, while also enriching academic understanding of the coexistence of formality and informality in architectural design.
