Abstract
=====================================================================================================================================
Neuroarchitecture examines how physical spaces influence emotional and cognitive responses through the process of memory formation. This thesis focuses on positive episodic memory pleasant past experiences, which can strengthen place attachment, reduce stress, and promote prosocial behavior. Building upon the potential of these memories, this thesis hypothesizes: what if architecture could interpret the episodic memories of the community who experienced the Kuta of the past to construct new episodic memories for future generations, helping them understand the identity of place in Kuta, Bali? Therefore, this thesis proposes a schematic design for a cultural center, as such a facility can foster a sense of belonging and preserving collective memory.
The design process utilizes a concept-based framework, starting with fact-gathering through in-depth interviews and observation. The findings indicate that Kuta has lost its distinct atmosphere, leading to the overarching design concept of “architecture as atmospheric reconstruction". The serene, peaceful atmosphere and sense of solidarity from old Kuta are translated into the architectural domain using a domain-to-domain transfer strategy, yielding concrete design concepts. These concepts are synthesized into a schematic design using the narrative architecture method, resulting in six scenarios based on memory mechanisms that guide users in reconstructing episodic memories.
This thesis produces a schematic design for a cultural center that delivers a spatial atmosphere representing the memory of Kuta. The design incorporates Kuta’s spatiotemporal context by reflecting the landscape, materials, scale, and circulation proportions of old Kuta, alongside an adaptation of the traditional Tri Angga and Tri Mandala philosophies. Event segmentation is established through the strategic manipulation of openings, light, and color throughout the design. Finally, sensory stimuli tied to the memory of Kuta are brought forward through the landscape, spatial programming, and skylight patterns.
